Step-by-step guide

Growkit Instructions

A complete guide to using your growkit — temperature, humidity, mycelium observation and solving common problems.

Legal notice

The cultivation of fruiting bodies of psilocybin-containing mushrooms may be illegal in your jurisdiction. The information below is educational in nature and is based on scientific literature and user experience. Legal status varies by jurisdiction — check the applicable laws in your country before taking any action.

Instruction steps

1

Open the package

Carefully cut along the tape to avoid damaging the growkit. Remove the growkit from the packaging.

2

Bag aeration

After removing the growkit, gently unfold the collapsed part of the bag so that its top edge sits above the substrate block. The bag may appear "sucked in" with the walls sticking together — this is completely normal. Within a few hours, the bag will fill with air on its own, creating the proper space. Do not puncture or open the bag — the entire process is automatic.

Make sure the white filter on the front wall of the bag is not blocked by the back wall. If you notice the bag is sticking together at this point, gently separate the walls by gripping them with your fingers below the filter.

3

Placement in the right spot

Place the growkit in a shaded area with access to natural light — the mycelium does not need strong lighting, it only needs to recognise the day-night cycle. A good option is placing it on a shelf or a cabinet.

Avoid placing the growkit near plants, radiators, pets, or open windows. These factors can negatively affect the development and condition of the mycelium.

4

Proper temperature

The growkit is best kept at a stable temperature around 23°C. Maintaining a stable temperature promotes proper mycelium development. Too low a temperature can stall growth, while too high a temperature can suffocate the mycelium.

5

Condensation and condition monitoring

Condensation appearing on the bag walls is a good sign — it indicates proper humidity. Do not open the bag, let the process proceed naturally. Maintaining proper humidity inside the bag is crucial for mycelium development.

Observe the bag walls and respond to what you see. Light condensation — conditions are fine, do not change anything. If water collects in droplets and drips onto the substrate — too much humidity, open the bag for a few minutes to exchange air and close with clips. If the substrate starts drying on the surface — too much ventilation, reduce frequency. If the mycelium overgrows the entire substrate surface forming a thick, dense layer (overlay) — insufficient air exchange, ventilate more often. There is no universal rule — conditions in every room are different.

6

Primordia and pins

Legal regulation ⚖️ This stage marks the legal boundary in many jurisdictions. Observing primordia may be permissible — further development of fruiting bodies is subject to legal regulation. Check your local laws →

Primordia are the first fruiting stage, initially appearing as small, spherical structures resembling tiny styrofoam balls. As the process advances, primordia transform into so-called pins — young fruiting bodies. Pins represent the next stage of development that will soon lead to full growth of mature mushrooms.

Note: If you own a Psilocybe cubensis growkit, check the legal status in your country. In some jurisdictions, you must stop observation at the primordia stage and dispose of the growkit.

7

Fruiting body maturity

Legal regulation ⚖️ This stage is subject to legal regulation in many countries. Cultivation of psilocybin mushroom fruiting bodies may be illegal in your jurisdiction. Check your local laws →

Assessing fruiting body maturity is crucial for determining the right harvest time. When the veil (membrane connecting the cap to the stem) breaks, this is the best moment for harvesting.

8

Harvesting fruiting bodies

Legal regulation ⚖️ This stage is subject to legal regulation in many countries. Cultivation of psilocybin mushroom fruiting bodies may be illegal in your jurisdiction. Check your local laws →

Harvesting fruiting bodies should be done carefully to avoid damaging the mycelium and ensure its proper development in subsequent fruiting cycles. Before starting the harvest, thoroughly wash your hands and open the growkit. Grip the fruiting body at its base and gently twist it out of the mycelium. If possible, also remove smaller mushrooms, though there is no need to pick them at all costs. It is important to protect the mycelium — try to minimise interference to preserve its structure, allowing future fruiting body development.

9

Restarting the mycelium

Legal regulation ⚖️ This stage is subject to legal regulation in many countries. Cultivation of psilocybin mushroom fruiting bodies may be illegal in your jurisdiction. Check your local laws →

Generously spray the inside of the bag and the mycelium surface with filtered or boiled and cooled water at room temperature. Alternatively, you can inject approximately 15 ml of water directly into the mycelium. After rehydration, ensure there is adequate air in the bag and close it with the included clips. After these steps, the growkit is ready for the next fruiting cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to questions about common growkit problems — mold, residue, contamination and storage conditions.

The growkits we sell are not intended for cultivation, but solely for mycelium observation. The above describes the process of bringing a growkit to fruiting. Check the legal status of mycelium and substances such as psilocin and psilocybin in the country where you will be conducting research.
